<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector enabling a user to easily recognize abnormality of a projection surface, and its control method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a test key of a control panel or a remote control device is operated by the user, a control part controls to superpose and display a test pattern TP (horizontal line Lh and vertical line Lv) on an input image Pi. Thereafter, when a direction key is operated by the user, the control part moves the test pattern TP by a predetermined distance (for example, distance equivalent to one pixel) in a direction corresponding to the operated direction key. Therefore, the user can gradually move the horizontal line Lh and the vertical line Lv in an optional direction by repeating operation of the direction key (including maintaining a state where the direction key is kept operated (depressed)).
