PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of stabilizing image density, preventing the occurrence of image unevenness age, and performing a high quality image formation by preventing partial sticking of a toner external additive to the surface of an intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes an intermediate transfer belt 8 for temporarily bearing a toner image, and a plurality of density detection sensors 14 for detecting densities on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8, which are disposed along the direction of the rotation axis of the intermediate transfer belt 8. If differences between the densities on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8 in the direction of the rotation axis, detected by these density detection sensors 14, exceeds a reference value, the intermediate transfer belt 8 is rotated while a specific toner pattern is formed in the highest density area on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8 within a period of non-transfer to paper P. This makes it possible to uniformly attach the external additive for toner to the whole surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8, thus preventing nonuniform attachment of it.
