The method involves expanding transmission light beams (3) in longitudinal direction of a receiver (5), such that the transmission light beams are reflected from a surface area of a detected object (6) as receiving light beams (4) at the receiver. The result of the receiving signals is evaluated for determining the central position of the object. The receiving signals are available at the receiving elements (5a,5b).
