<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toner for forming an image of high image quality exhibiting high resolution where a final visible image exhibits high image density and high thin-line reproducibility over a long term period. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The toner comprises at least color particles containing a binder resin composed of a polyester resin and a colorant, and external additive fine particles. The toner has a degree of average circularity of 0.950 to 0.990, a volume-based median diameter of 4.5 to 8.0 μm, and a volume-based particle diameter dispersibility (CV<SB>VOL</SB>value) of 15 to 25, and contains a metal selected from titanium, germanium and aluminum in an amount of 10 to 1,500 ppm. The external additive fine particles comprise a composite oxide containing a silicon atom and at least either a titanium atom or an aluminum atom. When an existence ratio of silicon atoms in the entire external additive fine particles is denoted as R<SB>1</SB>and an existence ratio of silicon atoms in a surface layer is denoted as R<SB>2</SB>, a coefficient (R<SB>1</SB>)/(R<SB>2</SB>) ≤1.0.
