PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene used when synthesizing an electroconductive polymer especially suitably usable as a solid electrolyte or the like for a solid electrolytic capacitor in high purity and in high yield. SOLUTION: The method for producing the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene includes decarboxylating a 3,4-alkylenedioxy-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid in an aprotic polar solvent having the boiling point not lower than 100°C and lower than that of the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene to be obtained, removing the aprotic polar solvent, adding a solvent immiscible with the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene to the resultant product, distilling the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene with the solvent, and isolating the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene from the solvent by utilizing the separation of the 3,4-alkylenedioxythiophene and the solvent into two phases.
