A device management system includes a plurality of parent devices, a plurality of child devices, and an alternative unit for detecting a failure of an area unit (1). Then, the alternative unit (5) collects data from a unit (2) (an illumination control unit (20), a measurement management unit (21)) which has been communicating with the area unit (1) which has failed, performs an initialization process, and starts management of the unit (2). Thus, even when a parent device has failed, management of a child device which has been managed by the parent device that has failed can be continued without interruption.
