<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus which compress video data into a smaller size by using a combination of irreversible compression and reversible compression and incorporates additional information into the compressed data. <P>SOLUTION: The present method is able to be used to compress a reference frame of a video codec in which small noise has an important meaning and to reduce a bus bandwidth. Data transmission between an encoder connected via an external bus in a video codec and an external frame memory is reduced. The reduction is performed by compressing data from the encoder before inputting the data into the frame memory via the external bus and by decompressing the compressed data after fetching the compressed data from the frame memory via the external bus. The reference frame is compressed into a variable size without generating a distortion to be considered, thereby reducing the bus bandwidth between a core of the encoder and the external memory. In the present method, the irreversible compression and the reversible compression are integrated in such a manner that the compression effect becomes maximum. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
