<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for generating range image data for vehicles, capable of continuously grasping a situation ahead of own vehicle. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The apparatus includes a projector 5, image intensifier 7b, a high-speed camera 8, a timing controller 9 for controlling the image intensifier and the high-speed camera, and an image processing section 10 which generates range image data representing a distance to an object per pixel, based on brightness of an identical pixel in a plurality of pick-up images with different target distances obtained from the image intensifier 7b and the high-speed camera 8.
