Provided are a method and an apparatus for transmitting a control signal in a radio communication system. A modulated sequence is diffused in a first slot by using a first orthogonal sequence to generate a first diffused sequence, and the modulated sequence is diffused in a second slot by using a second orthogonal sequence to generate a second diffused sequence. The first diffused sequence and the second diffused sequence are transmitted in a sub frame. The length of the second orthogonal sequence is shorter than that of the first orthogonal sequence, and the second orthogonal sequence is generated by removing at least one element in the first orthogonal sequence, wherein at least one element removed is the same in every index of the first orthogonal sequence.
