PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device with superior image display quality which caries out rapid and stable writing operations and displays a smooth gradation, without generating false contours. SOLUTION: The protection layer of the plasma display panel is constructed of a ground protection layer which is formed of a thin film of a metal oxide containing at least one of magnesium oxide, strontium oxide, calcium oxide, and barium oxide, and a particle layer which is formed by adhering single-crystal particles of magnesium oxide having a NaCl crystal structure which is surrounded by specific two kinds of orientation surfaces made of a (100) plane and a (111) plane to the substrate protective layer. A panel drive circuit drives a panel by constituting one field period, by arranging in time-wise a second subfield group, having a plurality of subfields which have a writing period Tw to eliminate wall charges for generating sustaining discharge and a sustaining period Ts, after a first subfield group having a plurality of subfields which have an initialization period Ti, a writing period Tw to form wall charges for generating sustaining discharge, and a sustaining period Ts.
