Disclosed is an organic EL device having high external quantum efficiency and long life. An illuminating device and a display device each using the organic EL device are also disclosed. The organic EL device comprises a plurality of organic compound layers which are interposed between an anode and a cathode and include a light-emitting layer and at least one hole-transporting layer. In this organic EL device, a phosphorescent light-emitting compound contained in the light-emitting layer emits light. The organic EL device is characterized in that at least one hole-transporting layer contains two or more polymerizable compounds represented by general formula (1) or two or more polymer compounds having a structural unit derived from a compound represented by general formula (1). (In general formula (1), L1 represents a divalent linking group, and Ar1-Ar4 represent an aromatic group. In this connection, at least one of Ar1-Ar4 has a polymerizable group as a substituent.)
