Machines for making boxes. - A two-part hinged box having an arched or dished lid is formed in one machine in a single working operation by forming the lid and body in separate channels by shaping dies, the lid being arched or dished in the shaping operation, delivering the lid and body to a channel where they are assembled by movement towards one another and then delivering them to another channel where they are provided with an edge closing strip which is then cut to hinge the lid to the body. The body blanks 1 and lid blanks 2 are pushed in front of the shaping channels 5, 6 respectively, a die 7 provided with a gummed and bent neck strip Z then forcing the blank 1 into the channel 5 and bending up its side flanges against the neck strip while a die 8 forces the blank 2 into the channel 6, bends up its side flanges and forces it against a shaped matrix 9 by which the lid is arched or dished. The box portions then fall or are forced by plungers 13 into a channel 12, the lid and body portions being moved towards each other therein by plungers 14, 15 and, when assembled, being forced by a plunger 17 against a gummed closing strip fed through a slot 16<1> in the channel 16 down which the box and strip passes. The strip is thus folded around three sides of the box and reciprocating fingers operating through the channel 16 then fold the projecting ends of the strip against the fourth side of the box. Cutters 21, 23 then cut the strip on three sides of the box. |
