Video system 1 having image sensor 2, low power imminent event detector 6 for receiving and processing images from the image sensor 2 to generate an event signal when an imminent event is detected and a higher power main event processor 8 to receive and analyse images from the image sensor 2 to extract information (e.g. vehicle registration plate numbers) and having a dormant mode in which it consumes little or no power, and an active mode, activated by the event signal, in which it analyses the images. An event signal may not be generated when changes to the image are large, indicating that the sensor itself is moving or below a difference threshold indicating the change is due to noise. An illumination source 4 and transmitter may also be activated by the event signal and the settings for the image sensor may be altered for optimum capturing of the event. A buffer 10 may be provided to store data when the processor 8 is powering up or cannot analyse the image data as quickly as it is output from sensor 2. The system may be powered by a solar panel. |
