Disclosed are a water-soluble phthalocyanine dye represented by general formula (1), or a salt thereof (1) (in the formula, M represents a metal atom or the like, R represents a sulpho group or carboxy group, m represents an integer from 0 to 2, n represents an integer from 12 to 16, and p represents an integer from 0 to 4), and a water-based ink composition containing at least one such dye or a salt thereof. It is possible to offer simply and at low cost a phthalocyanine dye which absorbs in the near infrared region and is outstandingly water soluble, and to offer a water-based ink composition with outstanding storage stability, containing such a dye.
