When a power is turned on, a printer (10) selects and reads a mass storage class driver (59) and is recognized as a storage device by a personal computer (20) connected to the printer (10) via a USB cable. After PnP communication, the personal computer (20) receives an executable file for a switching program from the printer (10) and starts up the switching program. In a case where an editor installed in the personal computer (20) is used, the printer (10) needs to be operating as a printing device. The personal computer (20) therefore uses the switching program to transmit to the printer (10) information for switching an operating state of the printer (10). The printer (10) selects and reads a printer class driver (58) to set the operating state to a printing device state.
