The device has an additional lifting unit (25) arranged on a main lifting unit (23) in such a manner that main lifting height (hh) of a lifting platform extends to total lifting height (hg) using the additional lifting unit. A control unit controls the main lifting unit and the additional lifting unit. A main control element and an additional control element are switchable depending on each other so that only the main control element or additional control element is transferred into active state. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a lifting device.
