The invention relates to a method and a device for adjusting the encoding flowrate of video image sequences relative to a target flowrate (T c ), wherein the images (F k ) are subdivided into areas to be encoded (F kj ), the method comprising discriminating (A) among the areas (F kj ) the encoding complexity (C j ) of each area, sorting (B) the areas to be encoded (F kj ) according to a pre-determined complexity order, successively encoding (C) each area (F kj ) based on a decreasing complexity order while successively minimising the encoding estimated error of each area (F kj ), the final size of each image relative to the target size (T c ) and the flowrate of a sequence of video images. The invention can be used for the video encoding of images in video sequences, in particular for network video monitoring. |
