THERE IS DISCLOSED A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING BISPHENOL A BY SUBJECTING PHENOL AND ACETONE TO CONDENSATION REACTION IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST COMPOSED OF AN ACID TYPE ION EXCHANGE RESIN WHICH IS MODIFIED IN PART WITH A SULFUR-CONTAINING AMINE COMPOUND, CHARACTERIZED BY USING THE ION EXCHANGE RESIN HAVING A MODIFICATION RATE IN THE RANGE OF 15 TO 50 MOL% IN THE CASE OF A METHANOL CONCENTRATION IN ACETONE BEING IN THE RANGE .OF 400 TO 7000 PPM BY WEIGHT, AND ALSO BY ADDING A MERCAPTAN COMPOUND (E SP. ETHYL MERCAPTAN) TO THE REACTION SYSTEM. THE ABOVE PROCESS IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING BISPHENOL A IN HIGH CONVERSION AND HIGH SELECTIVITY, WHILE SUPPRESSING THE DETERIORATION OF CATALYTIC ACTIVITY DUE TO METHANOL AS AN IMPURITY BY VIRTUE OF ADDITION OF THE ABOVE MERCAPTAN COMPOUND.
