<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically sort out only a face of a specific person from faces included in an image without registering the face of the specific person in a dictionary. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A similarity X<SB>i</SB>between a feature vector J<SB>0</SB>of the face extracted from the image and a feature vector J<SB>i</SB>(i=1 to N, N is the number of faces registered in a face recognition dictionary) registered in the face recognition dictionary is calculated. When the largest similarity X<SB>k</SB>(1≤K≤N) is larger than a threshold A, a face extracted from the image is determined to be the K-th face to correct the feature vector J<SB>k</SB>and appearance frequency of the K-th face. Further, when the largest similarity X<SB>k</SB>is smaller than the threshold A, a face extracted from the image is determined to be a new face to newly register a feature vector J<SB>0</SB>and an appearance frequency in the face recognition dictionary. When the similarity X<SB>k</SB>is larger than the threshold A and the appearance frequency is larger than a threshold B, the face extracted from the image is determined to be a known face.
