PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which corrosion occurring in a magnetic layer etc. is prevented and environmental resistance is improved, and it manufacturing method, and to provide a magnetic recording playback apparatus which uses the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes, on a substrate 1, at least the magnetic layer 2 and a carbon protective layer 9 which covers the magnetic layer 2. A convex part 7 which is a magnetic recording area and a concave part 6 which is a boundary area separating the magnetic recording areas are provided on a surface of the magnetic layer 2, and a barrier layer 8 which mainly contains Cr or Ti is provided between the concave part 6 of the magnetic layer 2 and the carbon protective layer 9.
