Bleached shellac and methods for producing the bleached shellac are disclosed. The bleached shellac comprises reduced salts, reduced water soluble and water insoluble contaminants, reduced microbial contamination, enhanced shelf life, enhanced hardness, and enhanced scratchability. Coatings comprising a bleached shellac of the disclosure and coated substrates comprising said coatings are also disclosed.
