The device (1) has an auxiliary network (7) provided with electrical or electronic components e.g. coil. Auxiliary network variants are assigned to each of hardware variants in a unique way, where each auxiliary network variant contains the electrical or electronic components, which differ from all remaining auxiliary network variants. The components are geometrically arranged in a way characteristic for the auxiliary network variants, so that the hardware variants are determined by a measurement of an electrical characteristic of the auxiliary network. An independent claim is also included for a method for configuration of a hardware unit.
