<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To collect magnetic particles in the vicinity of a magnetoresistive effect element, and improve the stability of the magnetoresistive effect element. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A magnetic sensor includes a substrate 104, the magnetoresistive effect element 103, and a magnetic field applying means. The magnetoresistive effect element 103 is provided on a surface of the substrate 104. The magnetoresistive effect element 103 comprises a multilayer film and its film surface is parallel to the surface of the substrate 104. The magnetic field applying means has a first conductor group 101 having a plurality of conductors disposed in parallel, and a second conductor group 102 having a plurality of conductors disposed in parallel. The conductors forming the second conductor group run in the direction for intersecting with the conductors forming the first conductor group. The first and second conductor groups 101, 102 are provided in the substrate 104. Since the conductors are installed so as to be parallel to the substrate surface 106, they are installed so as to be parallel to the film surface of the magnetoresistive effect element 103.
