<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet conveying device and a method for detecting paper sheet conveyance abnormality capable of correctly and reliably determining the position of occurrence of any abnormal conveyance when conveying paper sheets. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The paper sheet conveying device comprises a plurality of acousto-electric converters 5a-5n arranged at a predetermined spacing between the upstream side and the downstream side in the conveying direction in at least a part of conveying path range X1 on a paper sheet conveying path, a normal sound storage means 6a storing the normal sound generated during the normal paper sheet conveyance at every position of the acousto-electric converters 5a-5n, and a comparative sound recording means 6b for recording the comparative sound generated during abnormal paper sheet conveyance at every position of the acousto-electric converters 5a-5n, and includes a conveyance abnormality specifying means 6 for specifying the position of conveyance abnormality in the conveying path range based on the difference between the normal sound stored in the normal sound storage means 6a and the comparative sound recorded in the comparative sound recording means 6b.
