<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-treating method with which the surface treatment of a metallic material can be performed in a short period of time. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for surface-treating the metallic material for forging includes: an annealing step of heating the metallic material under a non-oxidizing atmosphere; and a film forming step of forming a lubricating film on the surface of the metallic material after the annealing step. According to this surface treating method, since the metallic material is annealed under the non-oxidizing atmosphere, an oxidized film is not formed on the surface of the metallic material in the annealing step. Consequently, it is not needed to remove the oxidized film after the annealing step. Thus, the surface treatment of the metallic material can be performed in a short period of time.
