<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: when color misregistration is corrected through making an adjustment so that a color matches a predetermined reference color, as in a conventional manner, the color misregistration itself is corrected but an image is displaced extremely if the image of the reference color is extremely different from an ideal position and image width. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A printer forms a patch pattern of each color on a transfer member in order to detect a color misregistration, reads the position of the patch pattern and the image width by means of a sensor, and detects an amount of displacement relative to the reference color. In the printer, the average value of amounts of displacement relative to the reference color (an amount of misregistration of the reference color is 0), detected by the detecting means, is calculated. Using the calculated average value as a reference value, the position of each color and the displacement of the image width are adjusted so as to match the reference value.
