<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small and compact lighting system having a polarized light converting function, and efficiently utilizing light emitted from a light source. <P>SOLUTION: This lighting system includes: a light source 4; a polarized light separating part 6 disposed opposite to the light source substantially at 45 degrees to the light emitting direction of the light source; a first reflecting part 8 for reflecting and condensing one of the polarized light polarized and separated by the polarized light separating part; a quarter wave plate 20 disposed between the polarized light separating part and the first reflecting part; a second reflecting part 10 for reflecting and condensing the other one of the polarized light polarized and separated by the polarized light separating part; a third reflecting part 12 disposed in the periphery of the light source to reflect the other one of the polarized light reflected by the second reflecting part and the polarized light separating part to advance toward the light source; and a quarter wave plate 22 disposed in the periphery of the light source between the polarized light separating part and the third reflecting part.
