<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite retardation plate having excellent adhesion strength between a retardation layer and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer although the retardation plate has a retardation layer made of an organic modified clay composite material containing an organic modifying agent sufficient to be dispersed in an organic solvent, and to provide a composite optical member and a liquid crystal display device using the retardation plate. <P>SOLUTION: The composite retardation plate comprises a transparent resin film, a retardation layer, and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, layered in this order, wherein the retardation layer contains a binder resin and an organic modified clay composite material prepared by compounding an organic modifying agent and a clay mineral, and the organic modifying agent contains a silane coupling agent having an aromatic ring.
