<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To back up failure of a rotary encoder. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The rotary encoder 7 is arranged on a crankshaft 3, and an auxiliary timing signal generator 9 for an auxiliary timing signal 10 of a fixed frequency is arranged. A switch 11 is arranged for switching a timing signal 15 for taking sensor output 17 in an A/D converter 14 of a control device 12 by an encoder pulse 8 and the auxiliary timing signal 10. A reference signal sensor 18 is arranged for outputting one reference signal 19 at one rotation of the crankshaft 3. In failure of the rotary encoder 7, the sensor output 17 is taken in with the auxiliary timing signal 10 as the timing signal 15 by the A/D converter 14, and after determining a rotation angle of the crankshaft 3 per one pulse of the auxiliary timing signal 10 based on the reference signal 19, a sensor output value is preserved in the timing synchronized with the pulse of the auxiliary timing signal 15 counted so that the crankshaft 3 becomes a predetermined angle.
