PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder automatically adjusting PG at a proper interval in a short period of time, without making a head surface of a recording head abut on a support surface of a recording object material and the recording object material. SOLUTION: A PG sensor 36 is an optical sensor, and is arranged in a sensor holder 572 arranged in a side part of a wiper 571. The PG sensor 36 is displaced in a Z direction just near a platen 53 by displacing the wiper 571 in the Z direction. A top surface (a support surface of recording paper P) of a platen rib 531 of the platen 53, a recording surface of the recording paper P supported by the top surface of the platen rib 531 and a position in the Z direction of a head surface of a recording head 62, is detected in a noncontact state by the PG sensor 36, and thus, the thickness of the PG and the recording paper P is detected by a noncontact state.
