The method involves providing a sensor to monitor surroundings of a motor vehicle. Vehicle movement describing parameters are continuously generated and adapted to optical simulation representation of virtual traffic condition that is shown on a visual field. A sensor signal in dependence of the simulated traffic condition is provided to an electronic control unit that sets a driver assistance system into operation if necessary. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing the performance test of a driver assistance system.
