<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous carbon material having pores with a diameter of ≤1 nm (hereinafter, called as subnanopores), and particularly useful as a hydrogen occlusion material. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Disclosed is a porous carbon material in which the volume of subnanopores exceeds 0.2 cm<SP>3</SP>/g and also the ratio of the volume of the subnanopores to the volume of all the pores occupies ≥85%. In the porous carbon material, preferably, the atomic ratio (H/C) between hydrogen and carbon is 0.05 to 0.4, and bulk density is 0.75 to 1.7 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. It is possible that the porous carbon material is packed into a hydrogen storage vessel in the form of powders, lumps or the like, and hydrogen is occluded or released by changing pressure or temperature.
