<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that uses a surface potential sensor having a space-saving, low cost, high accuracy, and highly durable shutter mechanism. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a plurality of photoreceptors; a plurality of chargers; a potential sensor 2e having a potential detecting section 22 which detects the surface potential of each of the photoreceptors; a shutter 18 which is brought into an opening position and a closing position; a driving mechanism 19 which drives the shutter 18 so that it opens or closes; and a control section 12 which controls the timing of opening/closing the shutter 18 by the driving mechanism 19, the value of a grid bias, and the timing of applying a grid bias, sets the potential of the grid to a grid potential with a specific value, at the timing of closing the shutter 18, measures the surface potential of each photoreceptor relative to the grid potential based on a sensor detection value from the potential sensor 2e, and determines based on the grid potential with the specific value and the potential value read by the potential sensor 2e whether the shutter 18 is closed or not.
