PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning method capable of simply and accurately positioning a workpiece receptacle in a short time. SOLUTION: A lathe comprises a spindle, a first tool rest, a first feed mechanism, a second tool rest 25 having a turret 28, an indexing drive mechanism and a clamp mechanism and a second feed mechanism, the workpiece receptacle 30 attached to the turret 28 for placing a workpiece W thereon, and a controller. When placing the workpiece W with a different outer diameter on the workpiece receptacle 30 to make the spindle hold the workpiece W, the method comprises the steps of calculating an indexing angle position of the turret 28 and an X-axis directional moving position of the second tool rest when the workpiece receptacle 30 moves so as to make the workpiece W and the spindle coaxial, unclamping the turret 28 clamped by the clamp mechanism to make the turret 28 rotatable, and rotating the turret 28 by the indexing drive mechanism to index the turret 28 to the calculated indexing angle position and moving the second tool rest to the calculated moving position by the second feed mechanism.
