PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent data that must be protected by encryption from being stored inadvertently in a mixed storage area or plain text storage area.

SOLUTION: A computer system comprises a host computer and a storage system connected thereto. The storage system includes at least one of an encrypted storage area for storing data that must be protected by encryption and a plain text storage area for storing data that must not be protected by encryption. The storage system receives the designation of a type of storage area available to the host computer, and presents the encrypted storage area for use to the host computer if the designated available storage area is "Encrypted", or presents both the encrypted storage area and plain text storage area or only the plain text storage area for use to the host computer if the designated available storage area is not "Encrypted".
