<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a balance weight from being visually recognized through a transparent window portion, in an observation elevator. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The observation elevator comprises the car 18 is disposed in a hoistway 16 wherein at least one wall surface is formed as a transparent wall portion 30, and having an observation transparent window portion 28 opposite to the transparent wall portion 30; the balance weight 22 coupled to the car 18 via a rope 20 and passing the car 18 at a predetermined position opposite to the transparent window portion 28 of the car 18; a display device 32 fixed in the hoistway 16 so as to be positioned between the transparent window portion 28 of the car 18 and the balance weight 22 at the predetermined position; a shooting device 36 shooting a landscape which can be observed from the transparent window portion 28 of the car 18 through the transparent wall portion 30 at the predetermined position if the balance weight 22 does not exist; and a control portion 38 executing control for displaying the landscape image shot by the shooting device 36 in the display device 32 when the car 18 and the balance weight 22 pass each other.
