Toasting-apparatus. -In an electric toaster, a rack, or racks, holds a slice in a vertical position and is connected with mechanism, operated by a push button, which swings it away from the heater for insertion or removal of a slice. or reverses it for the toasting of the reverse side of the slice. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, the base 4 supports a false base 11, connected to the framework 2 of the toaster and housing the operating means for the racks 3 which are arranged at opposite sides of the heating wires 1 and are provided with transverse plates 7 to which arms 9 are pivoted at 8, the other ends of the arms 9 being carried on pivot pins 10 in the base 11. The racks have insulated handles 12 which may be used for swinging the racks into the dotted position shown in Fig. 3, or for reversing them. Additional mechanism for swinging the racks consists of sliding members 16, one for each rack, each having a slot 18 for a guiding pin 20, a lateral projection 22 to which a tension spring 23 is anchored, and a lateral projection 17 which engages a pin 15 on an arm 13 mounted on the pivot pin 10. The arms 13 are connected by a spring 14. If either of the members 16 are slid inwardly against the restoring springs 14, 23, the arm 13 is swung and operates the rack 3. To effect the sliding of the members 16, bell cranks 34, one for each slide, are pivoted on brackets 30 and provided with push buttons 35 with insulating caps 36. The arms 27 of the bell cranks engage slots in the slide 16, and a partial depression of the button swings the corresponding rack for removal or insertion of a slice, and full depression reverses the rack. The racks may be operated singly or together. A projection 32 on each bell crank abuts against a stop 23 and limits the restoring action of the springs 14, 23. The bracket 21 carrying the guide pin 20 has an extension 21<1> which holds the cable away from the mechanism. In a modification, a single slide 16 is provided for actuating both racks simultaneously. In another modification, the spring 14 is dispensed with, but each projection 17 of the slides 16 is provided with a cam slot through which the pins 15 project. |
