Apparatus for simultaneously displaying, preserving and storing fish and other foodstuffs comprises a display chamber provided with one or more windows on top, and having within it liquid atomizing means for producing an atmosphere of cold wet fog, and external means for artificially cooling the liquid prior to introducing it into the chamber. A storage chamber having within it means for producing an atmosphere of cold fog by atomizing a liquid is disposed below and separate from the display chamber. In the construction described, the display chamber window is formed by a plurality of parallel glass sheets 20, and electric lamps 21 giving a white or coloured light are provided. The fog is formed by atomizing by nozzles 17 liquid, e.g. water or brine, supplied through pipes 18. The condensed liquid passes through a pipe 15 to a chamber 7 where it is cooled by refrigerating pipes 9 and is then withdrawn and forced by a pump 10 through a charcoal or other filter 12, which cleanses or sterilizes or both, and thence again through pipes 18 and nozzles 17. The apparatus has also storage chambers 2, one of which may be kept at freezing and the other at chilling temperature. A fog is maintained in these chambers by atomizing the liquid through nozzles and the condensed liquid is returned through pipe 14 to chamber 7. The chambers 2 have cooling pipes 4 through which and pipes 19 in chamber 1 is passed cold brine or water, or a refrigerating gas supplied from a compressor engine 11, which drives pump 10, and a condenser or cooler 13. The chambers 1, 2 have doors 22, 23 which, with the walls of the chambers, are made of non- conducting material. Where substances, including flesh meat and fruit, in case of which contact with moisture is undesirable, are to be kept in the apparatus, the fog atmosphere may be omitted, or only used intermittently, and the cooling effected by the cooling coils. Means may be provided whereby the supply of atomized liquid to chamber 1 is cut off and turned on automatically on opening and closing door 22. In a modification, the liquid may be filtered to remove dirt &c. before passing back to chamber 7, or between this chamber 7 and filter 12. |
