The start unit has a starter motor (1), an inserting device with an actuating element (2) for merging a pinion (10) in an annular gear (11) and a control module (6). The control module controls an output stage (8) providing the starter motor with a phase adjusted current. The output stage has multiple switching units, by whose selective control different current intensities are supplied to the starter motor. An independent claim is included for a method for controlling a start unit for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
