<p>Disclosed is a method for producing a mesophase spherule having a small particle size stably, which comprises heating a mixture of a pitch having a quinoline insoluble fraction of less than 1 mass% and particles of a metal, a semimetal or a compound of the metal or the semimetal having an average particle size of not smaller than 0.01 µm and smaller than 1 µm. A carbon material (A) which is produced by firing the mesophase spherule having a small particle size or a carbon material (C) which comprises the carbon material (A) and a carbide of a carbonaceous material (B) adhered on the carbon material (A) is suitable as a negative electrode material for a lithium ion secondary battery. A lithium ion secondary battery using the negative electrode material has an excellent charge-discharge capacity, excellent rapid charge-discharge properties, and excellent cycle properties.</p> |
