<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that it is difficult to correctly determine the d-axis positive direction to be estimated based on a current actually flowing in a motor 16 as a salient-pole machine when a voltage signal is applied to the motor 16. <P>SOLUTION: A pulse voltage vhNS set by a section 68 for setting a pulse voltage for determining a magnetic pole is applied in the presumed positive and negative directions of the d-axis. In this case, when a degree of difference in current responsivity is small, if the positive direction of the d-axis is determined by a single detection result about current responsivity, its reliability is determined to be low.
