<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain high-density light assist magnetic recording by suppressing generation of near-field light at edge sections formed by the end faces on the near-field light generation side of conductive layers and the lateral faces of a groove and limiting the generating position of the near-field light to a strong magnetic field generation section. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A near-field light generation element 1 comprises the conductive layers 3 and 4b formed with the groove 5 formed of the two lateral faces 6a and 6b separated by a width not larger than the wavelength of radiation light 10 which is emitted when generating near-field light and a bottom surface 5a. The near-field light generation element 1 is provided with near-field light suppression sections 4a formed of a material with the positive real part coefficient of a dielectric constant, in at least a part of each of the lateral faces 6a and 6b. Thus, while the generation of the near-field light at the edge section 7b is suppressed and outputting of the near-field light from the edge section 7a is not suppressed, the near-field light is outputted to the magnetic bit of an information recording medium narrower than the wavelength of the radiation light 10, thereby raising the temperature of the magnetic bit.
