<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing ink from sticking to a conveying surface of a paper conveying path regardless of paper size by performing local control of determining whether printing can be made for every image forming range of unit area corresponding to individual line type recording heads on the paper surface of printing paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has: the line type recording heads 51, 52 having image forming ranges of predetermined width in a direction orthogonal to the conveying direction A of the printing paper 2; and sensors 9 detecting the presence/absence of the printing paper 2 on the conveying surface 3. A plurality of line type recording heads 51, 52 are arranged above the conveying surface 3, and the sensors 9 are provided individually according to the individual line type recording heads 51, 52.
