<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a high-quality coin image in detecting a coin diameter and examining an image without increasing device costs. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A coin identification apparatus 10 divides a circular array of LEDs into four areas A to D, and actuates the LED groups 110 to 140 at different quantities of illumination light in capturing coin images of the four divided areas A to D.
