<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber for side face leak light in which uneven leak is suppressed and uniform light is leaked, and to provide a method of processing the side face of the optical fiber. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The optical fiber 10 for side face leak light includes: a core layer 11; and a clad layer 12 having a single layer or a dual layer structure formed in a concentric circle on the outer periphery of the core layer 11, wherein at least a part of the peripheral direction of the inner face 13 of the clad layer 12 includes ruggedness along the longitudinal direction p of the optical fiber 10 for side face leak light, and the core layer 11 is unexposed. The method of processing the side face of the optical fiber 10 is that laser light is radiated on the optical fiber comprising a core layer and a clad layer having a single layer or a dual layer structure formed in a concentric circle formed on the outer periphery of the core layer in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber not to perforate through the core layer, and to melt the clad layer to give ruggedness.
