A hydrogen production device wherein deterioration of the catalyst is decreased compared with the prior art in an operating process in which only the starting material is supplied to the hydrogen production device. The hydrogen production device is provided with: a hydrogen production apparatus (1) which includes a reforming apparatus for producing hydrogen-containing gas from starting material containing sulphur constituents and hydrocarbon constituents; a desulphuration apparatus (4) which removes the sulphur constituents in the starting material; a hydrocarbon removing apparatus (13) upstream or downstream from the desulphuration apparatus (4), which partially removes the hydrocarbon constituents in the starting material; a first starting material supply path (23) whereby the starting material only passes through the desulphuration apparatus (4) and not the hydrocarbon removing apparatus (13), and flows into the hydrogen production apparatus (1); a second starting material supply path (24) whereby the starting material passes through the desulphuration apparatus (4) and hydrocarbon removing apparatus (13) and flows into the hydrogen production apparatus (1); a flow path switching apparatus (9) which switches the starting material flow path between the first starting material supply path (23) and the second starting material supply path (24); and a control apparatus (20) which controls the operation of the flow path switching apparatus (9). In an operating process in which only the starting material is supplied to the hydrogen production apparatus (1), the control apparatus switches the starting material flow path to the second starting material supply path (24) by means of the flow path switching apparatus (9).
