<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system and a projection-type display capable of meeting a request for the reduction in the apparatus size of the projection optical system even when the optical system is used for the front projection type while aberrations such as chromatic aberration and trapezoidal distortion are excellently maintained. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A luminous flux optically modulated by an image display device 3 is projected to be magnified on a screen 5 by a projection optical system 10 includes: a first optical system 1 having a positive first lens group G<SB>1</SB>including eight lenses, a negative second lens group G<SB>2</SB>including three lenses, and a third lens group G<SB>3</SB>including an aspheric single lens; and a second optical system 2 including an aspheric reflecting mirror 4. The projection optical system 10 is an off-axial optical system, and forms the intermediate image between the projection lens system 1 and the second optical system 2. Moreover, the expressions (1) T1/Y<12.5 and (2) T12/f1<6.0 are satisfied where T1 is the overall length of the first optical system 1, Y is the maximum light ray height on an image display device 3, T12 is the distance between the first optical system 1 and the second optical system 2, and f1 is the focal length of the first optical system 1.
