<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress variation (deviation) of timing at which paper reaches a predetermined position to be small, and to more accurately correct a paper interval than a conventional one. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Reaching time Ts since paper feeding is started until the paper reaches a carrying sensor is measured, and when the reaching time Ts is smaller than a first threshold value Tth1, paper carrying speed by a carrying roller is reduced from steady speed V to a first deceleration speed Vd1. When the reaching time T2 is larger than the first threshold value Tth1 and smaller than a second threshold value Tth2, the paper carrying speed by the carrying roller is reduced from the steady speed V to a second deceleration speed Vd2. The first deceleration speed Vd1 is set to be a lower speed than the second deceleration speed Vd2, and the most suitable deceleration speed is selected for speed reduction according to the reaching time Ts, thereby correcting the timing at which the paper reaches a timing sensor 16 to be a generally fixed timing.
