PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a following distance control device which can surely perform change of target following distance according to intention of a driver. SOLUTION: The following distance control device which controls a vehicle to regulate a distance to a preceding vehicle to a target following distance includes: a gearshift operation detection means which detects gearshift operation by the driver; and a target following distance change means which changes the target following distance based on the gearshift operation which is detected by the gearshift operation detection means. Especially, the target following distance change means changes the target following distance based on the following distance when detecting change to high-speed shift from low-speed shift, after detecting change from high-speed shift to low-speed shift during controlling the following distance by the gearshift operation detection means, or expands or reduces the target following distance according to each operation in a manual mode when operation to the manual mode is detected by the gearshift operation detection means during controlling the following distance.
