It is described a method for assigning an identifier to a network node (120) being arranged within a plurality of neighbouring network nodes (130, 135), The method comprises acquiring network environment information from at least one neighbouring network node (130, 135) by the network node (120), forwarding at least a portion of the network environment information to an assignment server (110), and assigning the identifier to the network node (120) based on the forwarded portion of the network environment information. The acquired network environment information may comprise a geolocation information about at least one of the neighbouring network nodes (130, 135). Based one this geolocation information the geolocation of the network node (120) can be evaluated at least roughly.
